Q:
Can a PC be split into two PCs?
Is it possible for a player to be split into two PCs, so that one of them deals with the party, while the other plays an NPC?
I know that I could simply have them both "rest" and play the NPC (as in a minmaxed party), but I'm wondering if this is possible for a single PC.
The PC is a level 5 PC in a d20 Modern campaign.
A:
Absolutely. Player characters and NPCs don't have to be in the same campaign, they only have to be on the same plane of existence. Therefore, you can assign your PC and his "companion NPC" to different universes.
With this being said, that PC would have to be in a different campaign than the one he is assigned to, or they'd have to have some sort of link between them (I'll leave it up to you to come up with a good solution).
Personally, I would recommend using two different campaigns and letting the player and his companion NPC switch between them on a regular basis.
EDIT:
As you said, you could split your PC into two characters, and split one of them into his companion NPC. In that case, you should make sure you have some sort of means to keep them linked. This could be:
a permanent link: i.e. the PC's consciousness is linked to his companion's, and they both see each other (though they can't interact, obviously).
a temporary link: i.e. the PC dies and is brought back to life, and sees his companion as if he were "saved" and brought to the same plane of existence.
A:
Absolutely.
The exact mechanics for creating a "companion NPC" in this manner have changed over time, but the basic approach is as follows:
Go to the GMG website
Click on "Adventure," then "Map," then "Assign"
Click on "Campaign" at the top of the screen
Type in the name of your current campaign
Type in be359ba680
